Founded in 1983 — by a former Boeing aerospace telemetry engineer, and a regionally prominent business-technology entrepreneur — our company quickly developed a line of level-measuring instruments for agriculture, which soon expanded into so much more. Demand grew, and the product line expanded, growing initially into chemicals and water, then petrochemicals, oils, lubricants and fuels, and finally cryogenics (chilled fluids and compressed gasses).
Best known under the popular brand names
Level Devil®, Lil' Devil™, Diver™, Pentacomm™, and Tank Teller™,
ESI developed a broad catalog of fluid level monitoring instruments used across the nation —
and abroad
—
by every size of enterprise, from individual consumers, to small fluids distributors,
to mid-sized manufacturers, to public utilities, and leading oil and chemical corporations.
Originally, ESI developed instruments that mounted on the side of tanks, to save operators
from having to climb the tanks to measure their contents.
When ESI's electronic tank displays first became widely available, demand grew for transmitting the display's data
to nearby buildings, then to faraway places.
In response, ESI developed
local wire and wireless comm-unications options,
then landline and cellular telecom, and — with the expansion of customers into remote areas — satellite communications.
The organization outgrew its factory in 2002,
moving to a massive, modern facility in southwest
Wichita, Kansas — the high-tech city that is home to leading U.S. aircraft manufacturers and computer systems developers, and a center for oil and chemical industries and agribusiness.

As ESI's capabilities grew, it began developing core technologies for industrial M2M ("machine-to-machine") data communications —
including high-efficiency programmable controllers, satellite communications, and state-of-the-art cellular modem circuits.
ESI's instruments have been adapted for monitoring and control of pressures, temperatures, mechanical devices, and other industrial applications.
Today, ESI offers a wide range of industrial monitoring, control and data-communications products and services, and customer-defined customized industrial electronics systems and applications.
ESI operates with a staff of trained experts, including an engineering staff with graduate degrees (including a former university electrical engineering instructor), trained technical support representatives, and a business staff with technical backgrounds and credentials.
With experience supporting a wide range of communications, ESI has been selected as a Verizon Solutions Partner — and has also partnered with other leading telecommunications and satellite companies, as well — to bring reliable data from facilities anywhere to customers everywhere.
In 2011, the nationally renowned Pipeline high-tech entrepreneurship development program (started by the Kansas Department of Commerce, and now funded by the Kaufman Foundation), selected ESI President/CEO Gerald Rues as one of the two most promising technology entrepreneurs in this high-tech city, awarding him a coveted Pipeline Fellowship.
In 2015, ESI developed a new line of compact, low-cost data monitoring units for broad-market applications. In the years since, ESI has expanded its "economy" line in features and capabilities.
In 2018, ESI became one of the first companies in the United States to offer state-of-the-art 4G/LTE Cat M1 devices
certified for M2M ("machine-to-machine") communications over the IoT ("Internet of Things").
ESI continues to innovate and develop state-of-the-art industrial measurement systems and software — and operates a vast system of computer services for gathering, saving and reporting industrial signals and
data — for customers across North America, and
beyond, to help industry manage activity and assets in a fast-moving, dynamic world.
